Letter from SUNY Brockport President / COVID-19

March 19, 2020

Dear SUNY Brockport Community:

Once again, I’d like to thank our students, faculty, and staff for the tremendous work that has been done and the extraordinary patience that has been exhibited as we manage our response to COVID-19.

We are taking all necessary steps to reduce our campus density in an effort to combat this virus. Sadly, this will include postponing our May Commencement ceremonies. This was an incredibly difficult decision to make. Commencement is undoubtedly the most joyous day of our academic year. It’s a day to celebrate the accomplishments of our students and for our students to celebrate with their loved ones. But it would be irresponsible for us to move forward as originally planned. This will also allow families to adjust travel plans with plenty of advance notice. Students, please make your families aware of this change. I will be tasking a small group with the objective of re-imagining our 2020 Commencement ceremonies so that our graduates can be recognized properly at some point in the future. More details will be forthcoming as we make these plans.

As you are already aware, we have also decided to continue offering courses through distance learning and other alternative formats for the REMAINDER OF THE SPRING SEMESTER. We appreciate the work our faculty has put into this effort as we do everything we can to promote social distancing and stop the spread of COVID-19.

These are just the latest of the many measures that have been taken in our efforts to meet Governor Cuomo’s crucial and necessary objective of reducing campus density. Other new and existing steps include the following:

All internal events, including sporting events and major activities, have been cancelled for the remainder of the spring semester. All meetings/group activities involving more than 20 individuals have been cancelled or moved to an online format. The SERC fitness center is closed for the spring semester.Following Governor Cuomo’s orders, we have provided telecommuting and other remote work arrangements in order to reduce the presence of our on-campus workforce by at least 50 percent. Many offices will only offer online and remote services for the remainder of the semester. Changes to office schedules and operations can be found on the Coronavirus website.BASC has dramatically reduced its dining services offerings. Only carry-out meals are now being served.

Students are being STRONGLY discouraged from returning to campus after spring break. Both students who were planning on returning to campus following spring break as well as those who remained on-campus during break should take advantage of the credit/refund program announced March 17 and make plans to leave campus. Our residence halls and townhomes should only house students with special circumstances, such as international students and students where other safe living and dining arrangements cannot be made. While we regret that COVID-19 has prevented our students from enjoying the outstanding residential experience we typically offer, that is, unfortunately, our reality. Fitness centers, restaurants, movie theaters, and many other businesses in our surrounding communities are no longer open. Therefore, it is in the best interest of both our students and our public health for the vast majority of students to move home.

The coronavirus has brought us to extraordinary circumstances, with many unknowns. However, I have no doubt that we will emerge from these trying circumstances as a stronger community.

Please stay well.

Morgan Manning House Program for 3/19/20 Postponed

March 12, 2020

Below is a statement from the Morgan Manning House program committee - the public program scheduled for March 19th has been postponed.

"It is in the best interest of the health of our membership and the general public to postpone the presentation "Taxidermy: The Work of David Bruce" to a later date. Because of the interest this presentation has generated, we will try our best have this presentation on a future date. With the unpredictable duration of the health concern, we will wait to schedule.

Currently we have not postponed Bill Andrews' presentation on Henry Seldon scheduled for April. As we see developments, we will make a determination on this program at a later date."
